Abstract

Given the discredit that the Deaf Communities have had for the advancement of their own education, a brief historical and cultural review of the main works that have contributed to the educational progress of the Deaf is made. Given the scarce literature and the lack of consensus, it is proposed to classify research aimed at improving reading competence in Deaf students, based on the use of dactylology, Sign Language, written words and illustrations. In addition, some of the main features of Kantor's interbehavioral proposal are analyzed, as a possible theoretical and empirical alternative to the cognitive model, which has been predominant in past and recent research dedicated to improving or evaluating Deaf reader's level. Finally, some of the limitations caused by the omission of the described elements are exposed.
