Influence of gender stereotypes on underdetection of ASD in Mexican adult women

Abstract
This study explores the experiences of women with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as the gender stereotypes that experts associate with ASD symptomatology in women and their potential impact on the underdiagnosis of ASD in this population. Two studies were conducted. The first was an exploratory qualitative study aimed at describing the diagnostic experiences of women with ASD (n=4, ages 24, 36, and 48). Findings from the semi-structured interviews revealed a series of stereotypes related to possible ASD symptoms. To document the potential presence of gender stereotypes among ASD diagnostic experts (n=7), a second study using semantic networks was carried out. Results indicate that factors such as communication barriers, social camouflaging, the stereotypical perception of women as “quiet” or “thoughtful,” and the tendency to attribute their symptoms to issues of sexual orientation or personality traits contribute to underdiagnosis. Additionally, the influence of adultcentrism and the limited awareness of mental health within family contexts were identified. This study highlights the need to promote education about neurodivergence and underscores the importance of understanding the relationship between gender stereotypes and the underdiagnosis of ASD in women.
